Weather Considerations When Installing Shingle Roofs

When it comes to a safe, long-lasting roof, weather matters — for both timing the job and choosing materials. At Enterprise Roofing we’ve installed shingle roofs across Dayton’s variable climate for decades, and two facts are clear: (1) weather affects installation quality and warranty performance, and (2) the biggest practical benefit to homeowners from weather-resilient roofing is insurance — discounts and sometimes insurer requirements for impact-resistant products. Below are the straight, practical rules we follow and recommend.

Key weather rules for successful roof installation

Condition What it means for installation What we do
Temperature below ~40°F Asphalt shingles become brittle; sealant won’t adhere properly. The seal strip gets dirty. Avoid shingle installation below ~40°F; store materials warm until use. Use roof cement to hand seal shingles if below 40.  Don’t install it at the beginning of a cold spell.
High heat (above ~90°F) Shingles can stick prematurely and be difficult to handle. Schedule early morning work; keep materials shaded.  Use cushions to help protect shingles.
Wind (>20–25 mph) Safety risk; shingles can blow off during install. Delay until winds are calm; secure materials.
Rain / snow / wet deck Leaks during installation.  Voids adhesive effectiveness and leads to water intrusion.  Underlayment can wrinkle Never roof over a wet deck; reschedule to dry conditions.  Underlayment may not lay flat if it gets wet.

(These thresholds are industry standard; manufacturers like GAF and IKO give comparable guidance.)

Practical recommendations from Enterprise

  1. Schedule for dry, moderate weather — aim for daytime temps 40–85°F and calm winds.

  2. If your roof is >12 years old and not impact-rated, consider replacement — insurers often reduce or deny replacement coverage on older, non-IR roofs; a Class 4 upgrade can qualify you for meaningful discounts.

  3. Document everything for your insurer — manufacturer labels, certifications, and our installation photos help secure discounts and proof of compliant installation.

Final note — we’ll make it simple
